Kia reports that its global vehicle sales in September increased by 4.8 percent year-over-year to 261,322 units. After nine months of 2023, the South Korean brand sold 2,354,072 vehicles (up 8.4 percent year-over-year). In terms of all-electric car sales, September brought a significant increase in wholesale shipments (closely related to production) of Kia’s E-GMP-based models, which amounted to 10,322 (up 69 percent year-over-year). Kia reports wholesale sales (on the manufacturer level or plant sales) – unless otherwise specified, unaudited, and on a preliminary basis. What is most interesting is that last month, the Kia EV9 wholesale shipments not only surged…
Despite production challenges and a charging network that often still leaves a lot to be desired, the used electric car market is booming. Used EV sales in the first half of 2023 surpassed the majority of new EV sales, according to the latest market report from battery health and data startup Recurrent. The company reports that in the first half of 2023, 140,000 used EVs were sold in the U.S.; that’s more than even the total number of new Tesla Model 3s that were sold in the same time period if you can believe it. For context, a total of 200,520 new…
Toyota is planning to test a fleet of all-electric pickups—not in pickup-obsessed America, or its home Japan, but in Thailand, where versions of the Toyota HiLux pickup are built for many regions of the world. Development of the electric HiLux was done in Thailand, but taps into decades of Toyota EV tech. Called the HiLux Revo BEV Concept, but far from a concept vehicle, this electric HiLiux conversion has its motor at the rear wheels, with a DeDion rear axle and leaf springs—a layout that allows some better ride and handling than a live axle alone. The battery pack is…
Credit: Kia America Pricing pressure from Tesla, increased EV supply, IRA Tax credit, and the looming model year changeover have spurred legacy automakers to continue sweetening incentives on their electric vehicles. Now there are six factory lease offers on EVs with an average monthly cost of under $400 before tax and license, which is a price point that rivals factory lease terms of low-priced ICE vehicles that include the Toyota Corolla LE, Chevy Equinox LT, and Honda HR-V LX. Keep in mind, the lease tax “loophole” which allows vehicles/households not eligible for the $7500 IRA tax credit, are available on…

If you’re among those Ultimate Driving Machine aficionados who disliked the BMW i3, you’ll be glad to know the automaker will avoid a polarizing design with its successor. BMW development boss Frank Weber told German outlet Automobilwoche in an exclusive interview (via Automotive News Europe) that the i3 replacement will be more conventional than its predecessor. “A lot of people liked it, but in the eyes of others the i3 was not a real BMW. A bit of an outsider in the classroom if you will. We will not repeat that in this form,” Weber told the publication. What is perhaps more…
Lexus PHEV review, GM EV delay, EV6 price cut, Toyota and Nissan concepts: The Week In Reverse
Which automakers this week announced a shift to the Tesla-based NACS charge port? Which long-running EV nameplate reclaimed eligibility for the EV tax credit? This is our look back at the Week In Reverse—right here at Green Car Reports—for the week ending October 20, 2023. The 2024 Lexus TX 550h+ plug-in hybrid is the best version of this new Lexus three-row SUV lineup, we found last week in a review, after driving all the versions. With up to 33 electric miles and nearly 30 mpg as a hybrid, it offers usable passenger and cargo space rivaling that of thirstier body-on-frame…
It just wouldn’t be a classic Awesomely Weird Alibaba Electric Vehicle of the Week entry if it didn’t include some wacky, far out machine that seemingly has no reason to exist. So in true AWAEVOTW fashion, feast your eyes on this free-range bumper car inspired by a Troncycle! I call it free-range because it doesn’t need to be tethered to a steel floor and a cheese grater ceiling like those old fashioned carnie rides. Instead, this little electric motorcycle is free to ride around anywhere thanks to its on-board battery. I’m not saying this is how your kids are going…
