Over-the-air (OTA) software updates for vehicles are the future, and they allow vehicles to keep getting better over time.  But sometimes they get far worse—even inoperable, as a recent update pushed out to Rivian’s R1T and R1S introduced code that crippled normal use of the vehicles.  Earlier this week Rivian software update 2023.42.0 essentially “bricked” the EVs’ infotainment system, preventing a number of functions.  The vehicles were still fundamentally drivable, albeit with asterisks. After the update, the infotainment systems of affected vehicles were completely blank/dark, and some information in the gauge cluster was also affected. 2023 Rivian R1S Rivian noted…

Cold weather affects the range of each EV model differently, but a new report found that some perform better than others. Recurrent creates battery health reports for used EVs, and has used the same data to study cold-weather range loss. This isn’t the first time the company has published a report on the effects of cold weather on EV range, but this time it has a much larger data set of more than 10,000 cars. Analysts compared range in 18 EV models in freezing temperatures to range in ideal conditions. The models analyzed retained an average of 70.3% of their…

Volkswagen’s small and cheap electric vehicle, which will supposedly cost less than $22,000 (€20,000), could become a reality by the second half of the decade, the German automotive group’s CEO, Oliver Blume, said yesterday at a conference, quoted by Reuters. As it stands today, Volkswagen has not yet made a decision on producing what is considered a spiritual successor to the e-Up! electric city car, but Blume is convinced the company can get there after 2025. With this in mind, it looks like VW will fall behind its main competitors in Europe in the cheap EV race. Renault just announced…

Mercedes claims its charging network will offer 400-kw chargers “exclusively,” allowing for higher average charging speeds than other networks that use a mix of chargers, some with lower power rates. The site also features amenities like restrooms, vending machines, and…

Perhaps most notably, it appears that Tesla is preparing to charge drivers to activate the heated seats feature — not just for the rear seats (already a thing) but for the front seats. This seems a bit much. While carmakers have made money on extra features for decades, there are some features that have become standard or are standard at different levels or car classes. No one has to pay extra…
