Cruise, General Motors’ self-driving taxi venture, plans to relaunch its driverless cab service in a single unspecified city in the United States. The announcement, reported by Reuters, comes after California banned the troubled business unit’s vehicles from offering rides on public roads following an accident where a pedestrian was dragged by a Cruise autonomous vehicle after being hit by a human-driven vehicle. After the ban, GM’s self-driving taxi unit paused all supervised and manual car trips in the United States, which caused a bit of a mess internally. CEO Kyle Vogt and chief product officer Daniel Kan stepped down, and…
Tesla has updated its billing policy with a “congestion fee” aimed at increasing throughput at its Supercharger DC fast-charging stations. According to the Supercharger fees page on Tesla’s website, updated earlier this week, users will now be charged $1 per minute to charge above 90% capacity. Tesla notes that this applies to “busy” stations only, but it makes no note about what defines a busy station or what percentage of Superchargers will have this surcharge. “This fee encourages drivers to charge only as much as is needed for their trip, rather than all the way to 100%,” Tesla says on…
China’s retail penetration of NEVs in November is expected to be around 39.4 percent, up from 37.8 percent in October. In November, retail sales of passenger NEVs in China are expected to be around 820,000 units, up 36.4 percent year-on-year and up 3.6 percent from October, estimates released today by the CPCA show. China’s passenger NEV retail sales were a record 767,000 units in October, according to data previously released by the CPCA. The CPCA…
Nissan confirmed it will build all-electric future versions of its Juke and Qashqai SUVs alongside the next-gen Leaf at its plant in Sunderland, UK, and said the new EVs will be inspired by its “Hyper” series of concepts recently unveiled at Japan Mobility Show. The Japanese automaker announced it is investing a total of up to 3 billion pounds ($3.75 billion) in the production of the three EVs, the construction of three battery gigafactories with partner Envision AESC—one more than initially planned—and related infrastructure at its plant in Sunderland, UK. When finalized, Nissan’s EV36Zero hub in Sunderland will produce three…

As much fun as I have with my front-drive Bolt EUV crossover on forest roads and other off-pavement places, there are definitely some hard limits to what today’s crop of EVs can do. We’ve seen Tesla’s weird silver truck-like thing struggle in off-road parks because that’s not what it was primarily designed for. Rivians and F-150 Lightnings do a little better, but there are places they’d get beat up and broken trying to get to. This isn’t a big deal, really, because the average person just wants to do very basic off-roading, and people trying to go on the tougher…
I was ambushed by the good looks of the Cupra Born when I went to Indooroopilly Auto Mall to check out the newly arrived Dolphin. I was impressed, to say the least. Although the Cupra is unlikely to sell in massive numbers in Australia, it is a welcome addition to the electric lineup. Over 500 had sold by the middle of the year. The Facebook Cupra Born community is full of positives, so I reached out to ask members who had owned the Born for 6 months or more for their stories. These are the answers from two of them.…
Stellantis, the automotive group that owns Jeep, among other car brands, is recalling over 44,000 plug-in hybrid Jeep Wrangler 4xe SUVs worldwide because their high-voltage battery pack may catch fire. The company issued a statement yesterday, saying that a routine review of customer data led to an internal investigation that discovered eight vehicle fires. All were parked and turned off, while six were connected to chargers. The recall affects certain 2021-2024 model-year Jeep Wrangler 4xe units: 32,125 in the United States, an estimated 3,856 in Canada, and 9,249 outside North America. Stellantis says the affected cars may be driven, but…
Chinese wind turbine maker Goldwind has installed its massive 16 megawatt (MW) offshore wind turbine in a “record-breaking” 24 hours. Goldwind has already brought another of its GWH252-16MW wind turbines online; in September, that turbine set a new world record for electricity generation – in a typhoon – by an individual wind turbine in a 24-hour period. (It produced 384.1 megawatt-hours in 24 hours – enough to power nearly 170,000 homes.) Goldwind is now getting a whole lot faster at erecting its enormous turbine. The company claimed on LinkedIn today that it “has set a new record for the fastest…
