(Image credit: Luxeed) Luxeed, a new electric vehicle (EV) brand jointly created by Huawei and Chery, has launched its first model, the Luxeed S7, which is set to intensify the competition in China’s all-electric sedan market. Richar Yu, head of Huawei’s automotive business, officially rolled out the Luxeed S7, the first sedan in the Chinese tech giant’s joint effort with a local automaker, at a launch event in Shanghai today. In some ways, efficiency has been the main struggle in the automotive world for the last 40-50 years. There have been times where reliability and overall quality struggled (for example, the Malaise Era for U.S. automakers), but during the last several decades vehicles have generally been pretty decent. It’s not uncommon at all for a car today to reach 200,000 miles, and 300,000 is becoming less and less unusual. Higher quality, tighter build tolerances, and electronic controls have driven past challenges in the automotive world largely away. But, starting in the 1970s, efficiency and lowering pollution both became extremely important.…

Earlier today, Tesla raised the starting price of the Model Y Long Range in China by RMB 2,000, its fifth price hike in the country in the past month. (Image credit: CnEVPost) As it continues to raise prices, Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) has started offering a limited-time insurance subsidy for entry-level models in China. Customers who order already-produced rear-wheel-drive versions of the Model 3 and Model Y between November 28 and December 31 can receive an insurance subsidy of RMB 8,000 ($1,120) if they complete deliveries by the end of the year, a message on Tesla’s Chinese website showed. In addition…

Mazda currently offers zero all-electric vehicles in the United States after it pulled the MX-30 electric crossover from the market this summer over poor sales. The automaker does plan to launch another battery-electric vehicle in the U.S., but that one isn’t reportedly coming before 2025. Mazda North America CEO Tom Donnelly recently told Automotive News the future EV will be an existing nameplate and likely a crossover, noting that the automaker will add more EVs depending on consumer demand. Launching a single new electric vehicle two years from now will hardly help Mazda get a foothold in the U.S. EV…

I’ve been covering the auto industry for more than a decade now. I may not be as much of a hardened veteran as some, but I am at the point where not a lot truly surprises me anymore. Today, I can safely say that’s changed because I have seen the Tesla Cybertruck up close and in person for myself. Let’s just say that the photos and videos you’ve seen so far don’t really do it justice—the Cybertruck looks like nothing else on the road.  Now, do I mean that in a good way, or a bad way? I’m still making my…

After asking its dealers to join it “on an epic journey of sustainable expansion,” Ford revealed over two-thirds of its dealers joined almost a year ago. However, close to 400 dealers have dropped out of the program since then. Ford asked its dealership network to become a part of the automaker’s “revolutionary” EV transformation last year. In December, CEO Jim Farley revealed that 1,920 dealers joined the program. Of them, 1,659 dealers chose the higher “Certified Elite” tier. The other 261 went with the “Certified” tier. The lower level requires a $500K initial investment and includes repair and maintenance and…

We’ve known for more than a month now that Tesla will hand over the first Cybertruck vehicles to customers on Nov. 30 as part of a delivery event held at Gigafactory Texas in Austin. Now that we’ve entered the week of the event, Tesla has also announced the starting time and—surprise, surprise—it’s in the daytime, which is rather unusual for a big event like this one. Martin Viecha, Tesla’s head of Investor Relations, announced on X that the Tesla Cybertruck Delivery Event will start “around 1 p.m. CT.” “The Cybertruck delivery event starts at around 1pm CT on Thursday, in…

Wireless EV charging may be easier with some new tech details. Owners of the plug-in hybrid Jeep Wrangler are being told not to plug in. And did all the other U.S. brands committing to the Tesla standard for EV fast-charging influence Tesla’s new congestion fee? This and more, here at Green Car Reports.  Fewer EV drivers may need to worry about plugging in each night thanks to some final guidance announced last week regarding hardware components for EV wireless charging. This “missing piece” of standardization that allows vehicle parking systems to assist with precise alignment over charging pads, could give…

Improbable and unrealistic scenarios are excellent tools to explore the odder aspects of our universe. Schrödinger’s cat being both alive and dead is a case in point. The trolley problem which had a massive resurgence in popularity and cultural awareness with the rise of autonomous cars is another. The thing about these scenarios is that no one pretends that they are remotely realistic or proposes seriously a world in which they happen. Quantum physicists do not create experiments with cats, boxes and radioactive material in order to test them, and would be horrified if anyone suggested it. Similarly, traffic planners…

SAE International finalized methodology this past week for an important hardware component of EV wireless charging systems. The organization announced a single wireless charging standard—officially J2954—in 2020. As part of the finalization process of that standard, the organization has settled on a methodology for hardware that aligns charging receivers located on vehicles with transmitters located on the ground or a garage floor in all conditions, and that can be interoperable with different hardware. Such an alignment methodology is the “missing piece” of standardization of wireless charging, according to SAE International, and an important piece toward reaching the 93% efficiency that’s…
